Florence Ramond Jurney is a Professor of French and Francophone Studies at Gettysburg College with over twenty years teaching experience at the undergraduate level. Her research centers on Caribbean literature, particularly francophone women authors that were the focus of her first two manuscripts. Her latest manuscript, co-edited with University of Oregon Professor Emerita Karen McPherson, dealt with key moments in women’s lives in contemporary francophone literature. She is currently working on eco-criticism in Caribbean literature and has tackled exciting projects on women detective authors. Maintaining an active presence at professional conferences, she enjoys stimulating intellectual exchanges. Professor Jurney is passionate about mentoring and has mentored several students for summer research projects with Kolbe and Fulbright Fellowships. She was awarded the Luther W. and Bernice L. Thompson Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008 and the Dr. Robert E. Dutton, Class of 1946, Memorial Mentorship Award in 2021. Professor Jurney is also a fervent supporter of French. She has been organizing a French and Francophone Film Festival at the Majestic Theater in Gettysburg for the past thirteen years, free and open to the public, thanks to various grants and sponsors. In 2023, she was elected President of the Alliance française de Frederick (MD). Through her role, she organizes and promotes events that celebrate French and francophone cultures. Professor Jurney supports enthusiastically programs that promote peace and understanding between cultures such as the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, in which both of her children participated, or the Fulbright Program, for which she was an advisor at Gettysburg College for many years.
