Philip Robinson is Director of Software Development and Selector in Linguistics at Cornell University Library. After graduating from the University of Oregon with an MA in History, he pursued a PhD at Georgetown University in Russian history but decided to switch gears and start a tech career in DC. In 2000, he became an application developer at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, progressing to IT manager and then IT director at Cornell. Ithaca, which has many wonderful similarities in character to Eugene, is a great match for Philip’s musical, international, and academic interests. He earned another MA at Cornell in Slavic Linguistics and became President of the Cornell Club of Ithaca (2019-2021). He is a dedicated lifelong language learner, with competency in six languages and basic knowledge of several others. Philip is also an avid traveler, frequenting various parts of Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean, always prioritizing communication with locals in their own languages. At Cornell University Library, Philip is a Selector in Linguistics as well as IT Director. The Selector role fits right in with his passion for languages and linguistics. In addition to his other interests, Philip enjoys playing about a dozen different stringed instruments with four groups playing in a variety of musical styles, with a special focus on Middle Eastern music – the Arabic oud and the Turkish saz/baglama. His group ‘Ithaca Taksim’ incorporates belly dancing with their live music.
