Sophie Silva

Sophie recently graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law with her master's in Conflict and Dispute Resolution, specializing in Regional and International Conflict. Where she focused her studies on conflict and atrocity prevention, ethnic and religious conflict, and human rights. Her main area of research is methods of prevention and intervention for mass atrocities, genocide, and war. During her time as a graduate student, Sophie participated in the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights workshop “Human Rights and the Climate Crisis” at Hertford College. Sophie interned with the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Center, where she conducted research on the historical exclusion of Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color from Oregon water policy, and assisted in creating water justice recommendations regarding relevant Oregon water and drought policies for the Oregon Water Resources Department. Sophie also interned with Genocide Watch and the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations with the U.S. Department of State. With Genocide Watch, Sophie was a member of the Bosnia Team, conducting research on genocide denial in Bosnia. She also researched and co-wrote a special report on the use of gender-based and sexual violence during the Bosnian War. With the Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, Sophie researched and created risk assessments for India and the West Bank. Sophie’s risk assessment of the West Bank was used as the basis of her master’s terminal project: The West Bank: An Atrocity Risk Assessment 2023-24.
